Talk about a raging debate.
Floyd Mayweather's easy win over Juan Manuel Marquez on Saturday may have thrown a serious monkey wrench into the plans of Top Rank.
The vast majority of boxing fans and media members have been lobbying to see Mayweather take on the winner of the Manny Pacquiao-Miguel Cotto sometime in 2010.
The feelings amongst most boxing insiders was that it was a fight that was surely going to happen. After Mayweather's win on Saturday, those plans could be put on hold. Sounds crazy? Not really.
There are many in the boxing world who thought Marquez won his second battle with Pacquiao. The first fight was a draw. After watching Mayweather toy with Marquez for 12 rounds, you have to wonder if Top Rank and Pacquiao would be willing to face him.
Boxers talk all the time about how they will fight anyone. But it usually comes down to the dollars. If Pacquaio and Cotto put on a great show and neither fighter suffers a lopsided defeat, there's a good chance Top Rank will schedule an immediate rematch.
One source with knowledge of the situation said the Yankees have already put out feelers about hosting a megafight at the new stadium sometime next spring. That would be right around the time for a Pacquiao-Cotto rematch.

Pacquiao vs. Cotto News
The fight will take place in a 20-foot, and not 24-foot, ring.
Promoter Bob Arum today said that the Pacquiao/Cotto fight would be contested in a 20-foot ring, contradicting a report in Primera Hora yesterday in which Cotto's trainer, Joe Santiago, stated that it would be held in a 24-foot ring. Santiago was under the impression that the ring would be 24-feet square because that is apparently what Pacquiao's team requested in the negotiations. But the Nevada State Athletic Commission adheres to a standard ring size of 20 feet and rarely makes exceptions. Arum claims that he doesn't know where the rumor of a 24-foot ring started, but it's not true. Most observers believe that a larger ring would be to Pacquiao's advantage, allowing him more space to box against a fighter many deem to be much slower than him.

In this interview with David Tyler over at Doghouse Boxing, Freddie Roach predicts that Pac/Cotto will go the distance. "Cotto certainly has his hands full but he has some advantages against us," Freddie says. "By fight time he will be 20 pounds heavier than us. He will be the bigger, stronger fighter who is a very resilient guy. Of course he has started to cut lately and I’m hoping that will be a factor for us. Manny’s speed will bust him up a little bit, I hope. I just believe that Cotto is taking this fight more serious than any fight he has had."
No site yet determined for Pacquiao's training camp.

Roach hooks up with Pacman
MANILA, Philippines - Freddie Roach wants Manny Pacquiao to set the pace against Miguel Cotto at the MGM Grand on Nov. 14.
“We will try to set the pace and not allow Cotto to do it,” said the American trainer, who arrived in Manila from Los Angeles yesterday morning, and presided over the boxing icon’s 90-minute workout in Baguio City early in the afternoon.
Roach, who flew in with conditioning expert Alex Ariza, told scribes that they will focus on “how to parry” Cotto’s famous left hook, which the Puerto Rican welterweight champion loves to throw both to the head and body.
Roach said he expects a tough fight against the bigger, heavier and younger Cotto, and in fact had predicted the coming fight to last the distance of 12 rounds, when in their last few fights he had called for a knockout.
“Believe me when I say this is going to be his (Pacquiao) toughest fight ever,” he said.
Pacquiao worked out at the Shape Up boxing gym of the Cooyeesan Hotel of the country’ summer capital a little past 1 p.m., and Roach had the good impression that his prized ward isn’t leaving anything to chance.
It made Roach feel better, too, knowing that Pacquiao had worked out two days at the Wild Card Gym in Parañaque last week, and had gone out running in the morning even before he motored his way to Baguio last Sunday.
“He looks he can fight on Saturday,” said Roach.

Bet on it: Manny Pacquiao will be next to fight Floyd Mayweather Jr.
With his engaging smile and handsome face, Oscar De La Hoya exudes the aura of a gifted salesman, a top producer.
It has served him well as he has built his company, Golden Boy Promotions, into a major force in the boxing business since its inception eight years ago.
This was a tough sell, though.
De La Hoya was trying to convince an assemblage of irascible boxing types late Saturday night at the MGM Grand that Shane Mosley, rather than Manny Pacquiao, would make a better opponent for Floyd Mayweather Jr. in Mayweather’s next fight.
De La Hoya knew he was pushing for Mosley only because Mosley is a member in good standing of the Golden Boy stable. The crowd knew it. De La Hoya knew the crowd knew it, and the crowd knew De La Hoya knew the crowd knew it.
The poker table was filled with professionals and everyone saw the bluff developing.
Nevertheless, De La Hoya gave it a shot.
“Mosley has a strong case, let me tell you,” De La Hoya said, clearly struggling for words to back up his assertion, repeating the same phrase but stressing a different syllable each time. “Mosley has a strong case. Mosley has a very strong case.”

Pacquiao starts training: Fans mob champ in Baguio camp
MANILA, Philippines - Manny Pacquiao is providing a different kind of chill up in Baguio these days.
Since arriving in the country’s summer capital the other day, the reigning pound-for-pound champion has generated so much attention that people have started to follow him wherever he goes and drool over whatever he does.
Pacquiao was met by a pack of mediamen, including those from various wire agencies, at the Cooyeesan Hotel upon his arrival, and a horde of fans, mostly tourists, when he went out for a run at the famous Burnham Park.
Pacquiao was out on the road at 5 a.m. yesterday, and instead of going to the Sta. Lucia golf course, opted to go straight to the park located at the heart of Baguio City. Before he knew it, a crowd had gathered around him.
Pacquiao chose a spot to do his morning rituals after the run, some shadow boxing, stretching and abdominal exercises as a security team tried to shield him from the crowd.
“It’s okay, Michael,” he told his Canadian adviser, Mike Koncz, referring to the crowd that had inched closer to the boxer to watch his every move.
Commentary:
Now this is worrisome. the last time Manny "Pcaman" Pacquaio trained in the Philippines, he only scored a unamimous decision over Marco Antonio Barera. I hope Manny can focus on his preparation specially the Miguel Cotto is a formidable opponent.

Bos: If Cotto evades early dynamite, he beats Pacquiao
There’s no one, other than myself, whose boxing opinions I value more than that of legendary matchmaker Johnny Bos.
Add Bos to the growing list of ring experts who think that Manny Pacquaio’s ride of glory may get derailed by Miguel Cotto on Nov. 14.
Why does Bos’ voice matter? Because unlike, let’s say Manny Steward who was bucking to be hired as Cotto’s trainer, Bos has no agenda, no self interest in the fight between the Pinoy Idol and durable Puerto Rican.
To hear Bos tell it, there will be two fights and, if Cotto can survive early, his chances of victory will increase exponentially.
“I see Cotto’s danger period being the first two rounds. He can’t let Pacman explode on him quick like he was able to do against Ricky Hatton. I don’t put much stock in those victories over Hatton and de la Hoya because Ricky ruined himself with alcohol and Oscar was stupid in making the weight three weeks out from the fight date with Manny,” Bos said. “Cotto is a different type of animal as opposed to those two basket cases.
“If Miguel can be wary and careful for the first two rounds, then I think he will be in the fight all the way and can beat Pacquiao. Cotto is bigger and stronger if not quicker than. But he has to watch out for first or second round lightning by Manny.”
Commentary:
It's good to read that there are more so called boxing expert that believe that Manny "Pacman" Pacquaio will be beaten by Cotto. I always believe that Manny fights better if he is the underdog. See you later Mr. Bo after the fight and let's see if you are right.
