For those who were not able to see the fight live in PPV and online live down streams, Manny Pacquiao of the Philippines wins over Miguel Cotto of Puerto Rico for the WVO Welterweight Championship in the World.
The boxing fight started very competitively with Miguel Cotto fighting behind his sharp left jab that put down Joshua Clottey. He also used power combinations to put Manny Pacquiao at bay, and matched Manny's combination with his own. Miguel Cotto had answers to everything that Manny put on the table.
Another thing that put the first two rounds in Miguel Cotto's favor is that Cotto's defense is very very tight. Cotto indeed tried to fight a very smart fight by picking his shots and not fighting in Manny Pacquiao's pace like what Ricky Hatton did.
On the third round, Manny did a very strange thing by going against what most boxing experts suggested that Manny Pacquiao should not do -- he allowed Cotto to release his power punches on his body. At first I thought that Manny is finding the Cotto is just to much for him. What turned out to be a mistake is really a brilliant strategy.
Manny Pacquiao did what Muhammad Ali did against George Foreman and that is lie on the rope 0r the famous rope-a-doup. This strategy has two effects: (1) It gave Miguel Cotto the confidence to engage Manny Pacquiao more openly (2) It wore down Miguel Cotto. Indeed strategy is only for the most elite boxers like Manny Pacquiao and Muhammad Ali who has the superhuman ability to handle punches.
Once Miguel Cotto became overconfident Manny Pacquiao find openings in Miguel Cotto's defense allowing him to unleash his power combo's to the head and the body of Cotto. This resulted to a knockdown for Cotto on the third and sixth round until finally veteran referree Kenny Bayless decided to stop the fight because Miguel Cotto was not fighting anymore and was just contented to avoid Manny's powerful combinations.
Yes, Cotto was able to escape a knockout by running like a chicken but his stock will surely drop just like what happened to the body go Ricky Hatton after being hit by the vicious left cross of Manny Pacquiao.
Who wins the fight? Hands down Manny Pacman Pacquiao!
