LAS VEGAS –Manny Pacquiao has given his trainer, Freddie Roach, a promotion in title even before he swaps punches with Miguel I’m No Angel Cotto.
“I call him Master Roach as he is my master in boxing,” the smiling Pacman said during a press conference Wednesday at the MGM Grand Garden Hotel & Casino.
So I guess that means we can’t call the Bostonian Coach Roach any longer.
Whatever, Roach was brimming with confidence to such a level that you might label it swagger.
“’I’m going into this fight with a ton of confidence. In this fight, my guy is the puncher,” Roach said.
“Manny went six rounds on the pads with me today and he is punching harder than ever. Manny has worked his ass off for this fight.”
Roach said Pacman went into the gym at 148 pounds and exited weighing 144.
But, Roach said, Pacquiao must be fast and clever at all times.
“My plan is for Manny not to get hit. I told Manny, ‘You cannot get caught on the ropes, not even once.’ I reminded Manny that he did that one time against Oscar De La Hoya and Manny said, ‘I won’t even do that once.’”
Roach repeated his constant theme that Cotto has been sliding as a result of his brutal loss to ruggedly physical Mexican Antonio Margarito.
“Miguel quit in that fight,” Roach said. “When that happens to a fighter, well I have seen it change people’s lives.
“Whether Margarito cheated on the wraps or not, it doesn’t matter. He took a lot of punishment all the same. Sometimes you can come back from that, sometimes you can’t.
“Cotto is just too slow for Manny.”
Roach thinks the Cotto camp is studying Pacman in his two bouts against Juan Manuel Marquez, both difficult and close bouts, even though Cotto said he paid more attention to Pacquiao’s loss to Erik Morales.
“Cotto can’t turn himself into Marquez, he can’t turn himself into someone else in eight weeks, it’s just not possible.”
As a veteran Roach watcher, I have to say I’ve never see the “Master” so cocksure.
Is the great trainer overconfident or justly secure?
Tune in Saturday night to find out.
Commentary: I don't want to see another mismatch...Come on Cotto give them your firepower! And when the smokes clear, remember not to stay too long in the canvass like Ricky "The hit man" Hatton.
